Dr. Locksley Munroe

Dr. Munroe was born and grew up in Duncan’s Town, Ragged Island. After his common entrance exam, he was accepted into Government High School in 1968, The University of The West Indies, Mona Kingston in 1975 and the faculty of medical science in 1976. Graduating Medical School in 1982, Munroe became the first person originating from Ragged Island to become a doctor. Having served 5 years bond to the Bahamas Government he returned to UWI for post-graduate training in DM surgery being the first Bahamian surgeon to complete the program in 1992. In 1994, through SLS and Prof Helm, he was trained in minimal invasive surgery in Ohio, becoming the first Bahamian based surgeon to perform a laparoscopic cholecystectomy at the Princess Margaret hospital.
Locksley Munroe has won many prizes including, in medical school, the winner of the Noel Hayes Prize for Anatomy and was given a scholarship in Biochemistry to attend the University of London 1978-1979 completing the program with an Honors degree. He was also the winner of the Chin Yees’ prize for surgical essay on ADHESIONS. The course and exam for fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh Scotland was completed in 1989.
His interest in physical activity was present from the beginning of high school, soccer, cricket, track and field and tennis. He played right back for the Government High Soccer team and fast bowler for the cricket team. For the Nassau house he was involved with middle distance running, 440,880, the mile, 4×4 relay team javelin and high jump. He was the representative for Government High at intermediate and senior level at high school sports and in 1976 was invited to be a part of the CARIFTA team.
He is one of the co-founders of the NGO Sister-Sister Breast cancer support, has sat on a number of statutory boards HHFLB, BMC and has held the position of Director of the Operating Theatre at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) as well as being Head of Department of Surgery at PMH. He is married to Marjorie nee Hernandez of Belize (1981) and has two children.
